In 2005, in a remote village in Eastern Romania called Tanacu, a haunting case unfolded at the local Orthodox monastery that shook the entire nation โ and the world. What happened was so disturbing that it inspired a feature film, countless documentaries, and debates among clergy, psychologists, and legal experts alike.
It involved a young woman named Maricica Irina Cornici, a 23-year-old orphan who had spent much of her life moving between foster homes and institutions. In early 2005, she entered the Tanacu Monastery as a novice nun, seeking peace and purpose. But within a few weeks, the nuns and priest noticed she was acting strangely โ speaking to unseen figures, laughing uncontrollably, refusing to eat, and screaming that she was possessed by demons.
The head of the monastery, Father Daniel Corogeanu, a 29-year-old former theology student, believed she wasnโt mentally ill โ he believed she was truly possessed. Despite some of the nuns urging him to take her to a hospital, he insisted on performing an exorcism.
What followed next was both medieval and horrifying.
